Vaccinations have saved the lives of millions of cats. Before the days of effective vaccines, cats routinely died from panleukopenia ("feline distemper") and complications of upper respiratory (herpesvirus, calicivirus) infections. Newer vaccines are available to protect against feline leukemia virus infection, feline infectious peritonitis virus and other infections (chlamydia, feline bordetella, ringworm).

Hurricane season is here! We encourage you to plan ahead for your pet's safety during a hurricane as you prepare your families and homes.
In the past, we have offered boarding for pets during hurricanes. In the event of a hurricane enetering the Gulf of Mexico and New Iberia is in the "Zone of Uncertainty," we will stop providing this service due to the lack of ability to provide proper care for sick patients and boarders. We are commonly understaffed during a storm, unequipped, unable and becoming increasingly uncomfortable taking in animals for which we cannot guarantee safety and proper care.
We strongly urge you to take your pets with you if possible. Purchasing pet carriers or travel sized cages ahead of time is important. We will be happy to provide you with a copy of your pet's records ahead of time as well. Do not forget to pack leashes, travel sized bowl and medications.
The state plans to have pet shelters available near human shelters in the cities of Alexandria, Monroe, and Shreveport. These will be open when the Red Cross opens human shelters. Owners will be responsible for caring for their own pets at these shetlers. The websites for additional information is LVMA.org
